Nepal saw a historic movement during April last year. The repressive and autocratic rule of Gyanendra was brought to an end which generated a lot of euphoria. This happiness increased when the Maoists and the seven party signed the historic deal and later the Maoists joined the government. For most of the people, this was the silver lining of the past decade and the hope for a peaceful settlement of Nepal's problems was felt.
People were told that the SPA-M will uphold the aspirations of the April movement and the newly formed government will have just ONE task at hand--- to hold the elections for the Constituent Assembly. However, as days have been progressing, we are hearing a long list of lame excuses, especially from the Maoists group as well as from the rest of the eight party alliance, about how it might not be possible to conduct the CA on time.
There is a concerted effort, may be resisted only by the Nepali Congress, to decalre Nepal a republic without holding the CA. The excuse being made for this is that the Royalist faction conspiring to prevent the CA from taking place. According to the majority of the SPAM, they are doing this to fulfil the aspirations of the people. However, they are forgetting that by doing this they are not holding themselves accoutnable for yet another of their failures. Once Nepal is declared a republic, the same thugs might again come out and say that now that Nepal is declared a republic, there is virtually no need to conduct the CA elections at all. This will be cheating the Nepalese people and we need to fight against this. All this time, CA was being seen and sold by these thugs as the only solution to Nepal's problems. Now that they have just walked into the parliament (supposedly by people's mandate) and have cosied themselves in the warm seats of the ministry or parliament, they are not willing to give it up by being replaced by the CA members. So, they are not conspiring to prolong this as much as they can so that they can cling on to their seats and rob this country further.
We need to now join forces to demand from this government and the parliament that CA dates be announced and necessary preparations can be made to that WE, the people, can make our choices about the kind of political system, national structure as well as economic direction that we want Nepal to take and have. So, come and demand for your rights--- let's start now!!
